ABC - Grocery Carts Used To Take Out The Trash
"A recent study found that grocery carts are among the dirtiest items that we come into contact with - possibly worse than the door-knobs in public bathrooms. But are store employees actually contributing to the grime? Most everybody would agree that grocery carts are pretty dirty. After all, they're used by countless strangers who may be coughing or sneezing as they shop. But our cameras witnessed store employees actually making the problem worse, using the carts for a task that most consumers already consider disgusting."
MSNBC Reports - "...Shopping Cart Handles Loaded With Germs"
Shopping cart handles led the way with 1,100 colony forming units of bacteria per 1.55 square inches followed by a mouse used on computers in Internet cafes, which had an average of 690 colony forming units.
The Gazette (Colorado Springs) - "Cart Attack"
"Dianna Emmou is grossed out by the grungy things seen and unseen on the typical grocery cart handlebar. So she keeps her baby, Frank, in his stroller and stuffs her groceries in the the storage shelf underneath. And if her shopping list is too long, she pushes the stroller and pulls a shopping cart, using the cuff of her sweater like a pair of gloves. "I guess I'm a little obsessed," Emmou says, "but I'd never put my baby in one of those." Epidemiologists would probably say she's wise, not wacky. Scientific studies have found all sorts of potentially dangerous bacteria lurking on shopping carts -- cold and flu germs, salmonella, strep, hepatitis B and even E. coli from leaky diapers."
